How to // Facial steaming

I heard about facial steaming from a very reliable source. Pinterest. Where I got my inspiration before that I don’t know! You may or may not have heard about this form of super skin detox, but I promise you it feels amazing and the benefits are awesome. The heat from steaming encourages blood flow which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. The heat causes perspiration (sweating!) which allows toxins, dirt and bacteria out. Let’s not forget steam softens the skin, allowing our skincare products to work double time now that we’ve loosened those pesky dead skin cells. In case none of that made sense.. plump, youthful, healthy skin. So how much does a facial steam cost? Nothing. Read on and I’ll show you to the fountain of youth.IMG_1738 You will need the following things for an at home facial steam. 1 bowl/dish. Boiling water. 1 Towel. I would also recommend you to use one more thing, CAUTION. Funny story, (or actually not funny at all) after a number of at home steams, one day I decided to sit up in bed and do my steam, like a lady of the manor (pff). I made one tiny movement, then a small amount of hot arse water spilled on to my stomach, that made me screech and slosh the water even more, resulting in a flaming pink belly and a drenched mattress. What a dork! So, step one: do your steam at a table. IMG_1734Get yourself a large bowl. You are going to have your head over the bowl so you want plenty  of area to steam your whole face. If you are looking at the mug on your coffee table thinking that’s enough, stop. Unless you are a cat, then carry on as you were. Grab a towel that will be big enough to trap all the steam in. This needs to sit over your head and the bowl, so the steam isn’t just evaporating into the air. As per my horror story, hot water is involved. I boil the jug, then let it sit for a bit before pouring. They say 43 degrees Celsius is ideal. That’s the what, here’s the how.IMG_1752

  1. Start with make up free, clean skin
  2. Pour the hot water into the bowl carefully AT the table
  3. Lean your face over the bowl, ideally no closer than 30cm
  4. Place the towel over your head, and over the bowl to trap the steam
  5. I like to steam for 10 minutes

The longer I stay, the better my skin feels after, so push through! When you are done you should have a nice sweaty face, ready for a rinse. Anything that has come to the surface needs to be washed away, along with dead skin cells. I like to use a gentle exfoliating cleanser, then moisturize. One extra step you can take is adding green tea to the water as it’s packed with antioxidants, to aid in brightening the skins appearance.

Nothing makes my skin feel as detoxed as a steam. It’s natural, free and fun so why not give it a go on your next pamper session!
